Cotgrave Computers: Protect Children From Porn
Protect Children From Pornography

Parents need to be aware of the dangers of online porn and adult content and how easily accessible they are to under age children.

Please Note If you live in Cotgrave we will come and install child protection for free, if you do not live in Cotgrave Below are more steps you can take to help keep your child safe, our recommendations are at the bottom of the page, or contact us for our free child protection setup. We see a lot of families where the child has complete control of the system and the parent does not even use it and would not know how to protect the system or even check to see if their child is safe online if they did, this role should be reversed and the parent should be the one with full control over the Laptop or PC with Administrator privileges and set their children as "Limited Account".. this way only the Administrator can make specific changes to the system to lock out adult sites and put safe guards in place to reduce the risk of their child becoming bombarded with adult websites adverts. The child can still use the system as normal but can not remove any restrictions on the system set by the Administrator.

This can be done quite easily by going to your control panel and creating a new user, give this user Administrator privileges.. once created you can log on as that user and go back to the user setting.. then reduce the original account to Limited Account, now this is done password protect your Administrator account and you can then start adding restrictions to the system.

When you have done this your system will start and there will be a choice of accounts, one for the Administrator and one for the children, the children can not access your Admin account as it will be password protected and can only access the Limited account, You however the Admin can login with your password and change your settings on your account or the child's.
Windows XP can have a hidden Admin account that is not password protected which can bypass the security however a password can be set and this backdoor locked. Windows Vista is more secure although there are programs that can change the Sam file to remove the password but most young children would not know how to do this.

If you are still unsure you can email us and let us know what part you are stuck on and we will give free advice on how to set this up.

Channel 4 have kindly allowed us to pass on information from their website in their "Protect Kids from Porn Campaign"

90% of children have accidentally viewed online pornography
The average age for first exposure to pornography is 11
A third of teenagers say they learn about sex by viewing porn

THE 8 POINT PLAN

1.  Prepare your child for accidental exposure to pornography. Explain that adults view pornography as some form of ‘fantasy’ rather than reality and that, in truth, porn does not reflect real life, real bodies, or real sex – it distorts them. Encourage your child not to hesitate about coming to you about anything they see online which upsets or disturbs them.

2.  Make a real effort to get computer literate if you want to support and understand your kids, you need to have a reasonable understanding of their world

3.  Demand information from retailers on adult-content filters whenever you buy a new computer for family use.

4.  Ask your internet service provider (ie. BT, Virgin, Tiscali etc) how to switch on the adult-content filters that they already provide.

5.  Apply safe-search filtering to search engines (ie. Google, AOL, Yahoo etc) that your family regularly use.

6.  Set up different user accounts on home PCs/laptops for every member of the family and activate parental controls on the kid’s accounts.

7.  Shop around for software that provides extra adult-content filtering.

8.  Keep an eye on your kid’s browsing history – not to censor or spy on them, but to keep them safe online.

Adding Router Restrictions
Most ISP's (Internet Service Providers) such as AOL , BT , give free Routers these days which will have settings to block specific sites before they even reach the system as shown below.

Access Restricting Programs

There are programs you can buy that can activate when the system in turned on and will run in the background, these can block certain words or any adult sites, although they are not 100% in my opinion they do a very good job. Do not confuse these with loggers, loggers will record keystrokes on the keyboard or take images of the desktop every so often showing you what has been happening or typed but do not block the access, the programs you need are the ones that literally block by keywords or site content or even chat programs so you do not have to worry about the child's internet surfing rather than monitor what they are doing, we do not want to take away the child's privacy but prevent the adult material from being accessed in the first place, a good program will prevent the sites popping up or accidentally searching for the Sex Pistols and having 200 million porn sites listed because of the word sex in the search term.

If you purchase some parental control software from a store ask them to explain how to use the software as they should be able to give you advice... again if you are unsure on something email us using our contact page for free advice Here

Our Recommendation
Protection can be provided by the Internet Service Providers (ISP's) such as BT, AOL, Tiscali etc, your Router can block certain information or your browser can restrict results... but at this time it comes down to the parents even though most do not know how to set this protection, the porn is sent to your system if you want it or not and they leave it to you to block it.

With this in mind the pornographic material is coming down the internet to your property no matter what, you most likely will not be able to configure your router yourself and browser restrictions can be removed as easily as they can be added, Admin rights can be bypassed by someone with some knowledge of a system... this leaves in my opinion only one way to go Access Restricting Programs, these are easy to setup and will sit between your internet connection and your browser or chat program ... they will load with the system and block the material automatically. Only by using a password that you set can the block be taken off so that you can use the system unprotected.

A good pay software is NetNanny as I used to use this years ago so I know it works, if you live in an area we cover or bring your system to us we will setup and configure NetNanny for you for free.

NetNanny is around £20 to buy a years licence so you can either purchase it through us for £20 and we will set it up for you for free or buy it somewhere else and we will still set it up for you for free.. you do not have to buy any product from us to get free labour in setting up Net Nanny.

We can only offer free setup for Net Nanny as we know this works very well, the other methods mentioned earlier on this page can be bypassed with some PC knowledge which some children have. It is important to read these disclaimers and limitations carefully. Your use of our site constitutes your agreement to these terms. If you do not agree to these terms you should not use any information from it.

You can also use Microsoft's family filter which is very good and free Here  Limit searches, monitor and block or allow websites, and decide who your kids can communicate with in Windows Live Spaces, Messenger, or Hotmail.
